Ring Saucer
Professional Category
Shen Yuchen

This concept is influenced by both Eastern and Western tea cultures. Tea is an intrinsic part of many cultures and tea-drinking an important ritual. The saucer is crucial to the 'sensation' of the design. This concept explores how tea is moved from place to place, as well as how it is usually served during breaks. A set of antique Chinese cups with hollow saucers was the key inspiration behind this design.

Despite the dynamism of our megacities, people still long for a natural environment. Inspired by the silhouette of a tree, this lighting delivers an indoor manifestation of the outdoors by evoking a sense of adaptability and unpredictability - key aspects of nature.

Alone - or as part of a collection that resembles branches on multiple trees in a forest – the unit can be used in many ways.
The direct or indirect light it gives off allows for a variety of perceptions of the same space. The hanging lamp can also be positioned on a wall, on the floor or even on a table top.

The idea behind this piece is an exploration of the differences and similarities between indoor and outdoor furniture.

While indoor furniture predominantly serves the individual, outdoor furniture is for the public and is therefore geared towards functionality, rather than style.

In this design, the structure of the wood bench is influenced by outdoor furniture, while its division into three one-person seats isanodtoindoor (individual) seating. In order to highlight the cultural changes of our time, I have drawn influence from the following periods: baroque, post-modern, Ming dynastyand Qing dynasty.
